Swedish-born Mats Björklund is an engaging singer/songwriter who performs his songs with a melodic voice and acoustic guitar. He draws comparisons to Paul Simon, Neil Finn, Sting and Cat Stevens.
Now living in Australia, in recent years his public performances have primarily been as a solo artist, playing at various venues around Melbourne and also entertaining at major events and private functions in the local Scandinavian community.
Mats is also guitarist in the Nordic folk music group Nordanlåt based in Melbourne. He has appeared at folk music festivals including the Nordic Festival in Warburton, the Maldon Folk Music Festival and the Newstead Folk Music Festival. During 2014 and 2015 he collaborated remotely with Pelle Lundblad’s Steam Mill County Band in Sweden. This involved creating and recording guitar parts and backing vocals for the CD “Min Stad”, launched in September 2015.
He regularly appears at the Darebin Songwriter’s Guild (Bar 303, Northcote), and various Open Mic venues around Melbourne, such as Wax Lyrical at the Murmur Bar and the Elwood Lounge. During visits to Sweden he has performed solo at Katalin, Uppsala, most recently in September 2016.
In the past Mats has been a member of bands and vocal groups both in Sweden and in Australia. This includes Major Nine, Bjorklund & Schultz, Sunnysides orkester and Uppsala Högar in Sweden, and Masters of Disguise and The Red Herrings folk music group in Australia.
Mats has for many years been recording his original compositions, so far resulting in the compilations “Journey to the Sun”, “Survivor” and “Rebound”.
In 2017, he has been getting a selection of new songs produced and recorded at Airwaves Studio, Melbourne. These recordings are currently being mastered at The Production Workshop, Melbourne, and will be launched as a CD and online very soon.
When not singing and playing guitar Mats makes wonderful animations, mostly for medical and engineering technology presentations. Find his work on his other website: Magipics.
